Missing, damaged or invalid Boot.ini file may cause data loss in Windows
Is your computer unbootable after upgrade to Microsoft Windows XP? You are always errors in the Boot.ini file? This behavior can occur if the system has an invalid Boot.ini file and therefore can not be started. This problem can occur if the Boot.ini file of Windows is damaged, missing or contains invalid entries.

Microsoft Windows operating system uses the Boot.ini file to determine which options to show the operating system during startup. By default, this file is not marked as read-only files and usually do not require any sort of manual editing.
Resolution:
To resolve this problem, boot from CD boot Windows XP, start Recovery Console, and then use utility Bootcfg.exe to rebuild the Boot.ini file. Follow the instructions below to do this:

Boot from the Windows XP CD.

Get into Recovery Console by pressing R when you receive "Setup" message.

Type the administrator password when prompted and press Enter.

Type bootcfg / list and press the Enter key.

Type bootcfg / rebuild and press Enter.

Close the Recovery Console and reboot the system.
If the above method can not help solve the problem, format the hard disk and reinstall Windows XP Microsoft Windows. However, this process removes all data from your hard disk and causes serious data loss. In such cases, Windows Data Recovery becomes the need of hour.
